Η Ευβοϊκή Δρυς: Ένα Ενδημικό Είδος που Απαιτεί την Προσοχή μας
​Φίλοι της Ευβοϊκής Φύσης,
​Με αφορμή τις πρόσφατες έρευνες, θα θέλαμε να μοιραστούμε μαζί σας σημαντικά ευρήματα για την Ευβοϊκή δρυ (Quercus euboica), ένα μοναδικό δέντρο που απειλείται με εξαφάνιση.
​ Γιατί η Ευβοϊκή δρυς είναι ξεχωριστό είδος;
​Σύμφωνα με την έρευνα των Simeone et al. (2018), η γενετική ανάλυση του πυρηνικού DNA έδειξε ότι η Quercus euboica είναι γενετικά απομονωμένη από την Quercus trojana. Αυτό το εύρημα υποστηρίζει την άποψη ότι η Ευβοϊκή δρυς δεν είναι απλά ένα υποείδος, αλλά ένα ανεξάρτητο είδος, όπως είχαν προτείνει και οι πρώτοι ταξινομιστές της.
​Αυτό το γεγονός επιβεβαιώνεται και από την εξαιρετικά περιορισμένη γεωγραφική της κατανομή. Όπως αναφέρουν οι Mucina & Dimopoulos (2000), η Ευβοϊκή δρυς είναι ενδημική της Εύβοιας και βρέθηκε σε εδάφη με σερπεντινίτη, μια σπάνια και μοναδική ιδιαιτερότητα για ένα είδος δρυός.
​Η Μεγάλη Απειλή: Οι Πυρκαγιές του 2021
​Το σπάνιο αυτό δέντρο υφίσταται τεράστια πίεση, καθώς το 2021, σχεδόν ολόκληρη η περιοχή εξάπλωσής του κάηκε στη μεγάλη πυρκαγιά που κατέκαψε όλη τη Βόρεια Εύβοια. Η καταστροφή αυτή έφερε το είδος ένα βήμα πιο κοντά στην εξαφάνιση.
​Νομοθεσία και Μέτρα Προστασίας
​Αν και το είδος προστατεύεται από το Προεδρικό Διάταγμα 67/1981 και έχει χαρακτηριστεί ως «Τρωτό» στο Κόκκινο Βιβλίο της Ελλάδας, η καταστροφή του 2021 απέδειξε ότι τα υπάρχοντα μέτρα δεν επαρκούν για την προστασία του.
​ Κάλεσμα για Δράση: Εθνικό Πάρκο Ευβοϊκής Δρυός
​Απευθύνουμε ένα δημόσιο κάλεσμα στους Δήμους και την Περιφέρεια της Εύβοιας να αναλάβουν άμεσα δράση για την αναγνώριση και προστασία της περιοχής. Η πρότασή μας είναι η δημιουργία ενός Εθνικού Πάρκου, το οποίο θα καλύπτει τα όρια εξάπλωσης της Ευβοϊκής δρυός και θα ενταχθεί στο δίκτυο Natura 2000.
​Η αναγνώριση της περιοχής ως Εθνικό Πάρκο είναι πλέον πιο επείγουσα από ποτέ. Είναι η μόνη λύση για να διασφαλίσουμε τη μακροπρόθεσμη επιβίωση αυτού του σπάνιου και μοναδικού δέντρου, το οποίο αποτελεί αναπόσπαστο κομμάτι της φυσικής μας κληρονομιάς.

​The Euboean Oak: An Endemic Species That Needs Our Attention
​Friends of Euboean Nature,
​Following recent research, we would like to share with you some important findings about the Euboean oak (Quercus euboica), a unique and endangered tree.
​ Why is the Euboean oak a distinct species?
​According to research by Simeone et al. (2018), genetic analysis of nuclear DNA showed that Quercus euboica is genetically isolated from Quercus trojana. This finding supports the view that the Euboean oak is not merely a subspecies, but an independent species, as initially proposed by its first taxonomists.
​This is further confirmed by its extremely limited geographical distribution. As reported by Mucina & Dimopoulos (2000), the Euboean oak is endemic to the island of Euboea and was found in serpentine soil, a rare and unique feature for an oak species.
​The Great Threat: The 2021 Fires
​This rare tree is under immense pressure, as in 2021, almost the entire area of its distribution was burned in the great fire that devastated all of Northern Euboea. This destruction has brought the species one step closer to extinction.
​Legislation and Protection Measures
​Although the species is protected by Presidential Decree 67/1981 and has been classified as "Vulnerable" in the Red Book of Rare and Threatened Plants of Greece, the 2021 fire proved that the existing measures are not enough to protect it.
​ A Call to Action: A National Park for the Euboean Oak
​We are making a public appeal to the Municipalities and the Region of Euboea to take immediate action to recognize and protect the area. Our proposal is the creation of a National Park that would cover the full range of the Euboean oak and be included in the Natura 2000 network.
​Recognizing the area as a National Park is now more urgent than ever. It is the only solution to ensure the long-term survival of this rare and beautiful tree, which is an integral part of our natural heritage.
